Tronyns Review

Ah, another 100 brush map from Xenon. Actually I haven't played any of his other 100brush maps, though I have played his speedmaps. This map though could almost pass for a normal Q1SP, and I don't mean that in a bad way. The reason you can tell is because of the lack of detail (though most places still look good) - you can tell Xenon was being conservative with brushes in order to get a lot of out a little.

The theme is very remniscent of Insomnia - the same sort of mix of evil mood (blood, evil sky, gore) and Quake2 tech (which I swear looks much much better in Quake). There is also a temple area, using a mix of textures, Daikatana, Hexen II and Q3:A to name a few. Overall, an interesting theme with a semi-decent layout; this could have been quite a stunning map if it had more detail and a more intricate layout.

The gameplay is nasty. You always know where to go and what to do, and there is a continual horde (a long line of shamblers - at one point!) thrown at you. This gets to be really fun, especially when you have Quad damage or a lot of rockets. Mainly you get higher-level enemies, which is fine, because they take more to take down - better one shambler than a pack of grunts for this type of combat.

All in all, this will help you out in these last Q1SP-starved weeks, though a full Q1SP or episode would do the trick much better. Heh. Judged on its own merits, CEnturion is certainly a fun experience though I found myself not quite satisfied.
